Interior Paint Guide is a free service that connects homeowners with local interior painters and painting companies. We are not a painting contractor and we do not perform the work ourselves.

The short answer

Measure the room's perimeter and multiply by wall height to get the wall area, then divide by about 350 to 400 square feet per gallon for one coat. Most walls need two coats. A typical 12x12 room takes roughly one to two gallons. Our paint quantity calculator does the math for you.
